Workshop Supply list

Pastels and colors I use:

  1. Soft pastels, pastel set/landscape set, or half stick sets are a good buy, as you get more colors. I use Sennelier and some Schmincke. But feel free to bring your own brand.
  2. Make sure you have some super dark colors too. Pure black, burgundy, brown, black green, and dark purple.
  3. Some important additional colors are by Sennelier are: 211, 334, 057, 045, 455, 284 and Schmincke 063

Drawing:

  • Sketch book or sketch paper pencil or fine liners.
  • Pastel pencils, dark brown or taupe 2 or 3.

Other Materials:

  • Terrycloth work towel or rag - two or three - 12"x12" I use the ones from the auto section from a discount store.
  • Small plastic Tupperware with lid approximately 7"x12"x 3" high.
  • Half pound of rice flour, should be in the bulk food section of you grocery store. As we work and paint, you will select colors and store them in the container with a handful of rice flower. Some students use rice or grits. This keeps your pastels clean as they roll around.
  • Wet hand wipes
  • Bottle of water and sunscreen
  • Camera, any kind
  • Photos or printouts of your favorite landscapes as reference materials to paint from. We will also be painting in plein air as well, so you may paint from your studies.
  • Folding chair, or other tri-pod stool. If you need to sit.

Paper:

  • I prefer sanded papers by *UArt*. Bring enough paper to practice and enough paper to do 6 to 8 paintings.
  • UArt is a great new paper, I dry-mount my paper to white Gator board leaving a 1.5 " white border.
  • The dry-mounted paper gives a nice tooth/texture. But you may just use the paper as well. Suggested sizes are 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, you can work larger if you prefer.
If you bring some color papers keep them neutral or natural. You can bring other paper as well to experiment on, but I will be working on UArt.

Support:

  • French easel or tri-pod set up.
  • Tape or small plastic hand clamps to clamp art boards to easel.
  • A drawing board to tape or clamp art paper to easel
  • Art board to tape paper too. I use foam core or two pieces glued together.
  • Artist tape (kind that won't rip paper)

*This is just a suggestion of things that I use and thought would be helpful. You can bring your own set up as well. *

A note from Clive :
My workshops are about getting in touch with your creative side, getting rid of fear and being free to try new techniques and learning other approaches to painting landscape and learning more about pastel.

Pastel offers clean colors, the ability to work quickly and unique properties that can not be accomplished with other mediums.

I teach a Plein air workshop as I believe that you can learn the most from the real and changing world. Yes it is challenging with the uncontrollable elements, but my students have learned new insights and concepts to paint by and to take back to the studio.

If you want to learn more about Plein air, Atmospheric conditions, Color, Values, you will get something of great value from my classes. Landscape Photos to plein air; why there is a difference. I teach a simple approach on 'How to" but will explain the 'whys' warm colors turn cool, what cool really means, why colors fade and grey out. We take on landscapes, skies, water, and trees and rocks. We will work on how to simplify what we are looking at so our approach to painting will go quickly. I will do several demonstrations over the course of the 3 day and the 2 day workshops in pastels. You will get personal attention, and handouts. All levels of experience are welcome. There is always something new to learn.

A supply list will be sent when you register.

Artist’s Reception at Atelier 6000, Sunday July 18, 7-8:30pm

Clive’s workshops are about getting in touch with your creative side, getting rid of fear, and feeling free to try new techniques.  He teaches unique approaches to painting plein air and shares his passion with working in pastel:

“I teach plein air workshops as I believe that you can learn the most from the real and changing world. Yes, it is challenging working in uncontrollable elements, but my students learn new insights and concepts to paint by and to take back to the studio.  There is something new and exciting to learn each day.”

Increase your knowledge of atmospheric conditions, color, values in plein air painting, while learning how to simplify the elements of your painting.  Clive teaches a direct 'How to" approach while explaining the 'whys' -  why warm colors turn cool, what cool really means, why colors fade and grey out, and more.  Take on landscapes ¬- skies, rushing and still water, trees and rocks - while intensifying your understanding of the scene and increasing the speed of your plein air work.  Clive will do several demonstrations over the course of workshop, offering each student personal attention and handouts for future reference.

Clive R. Tyler studied both fine art and design at Kent State University and had a 20- year career as a graphic and product designer. A dedicated plein air painter, his work has won many honors and awards, including Best of Show at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, the People’s Choice Award from the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Paint Out; and The Pastel Journal’s 8th Annual Pastel 100 competition. He’s an elected member of the Pastel Society of America and a signature member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters.
